Fabulous Phonics: the foundation of reading and writing

Course outline:

This course is aimed at newly-qualified teachers, teaching assistants and teachers new to Early Years and KS1. The training assumes that a systematic synthetic phonic programme is in use in the school, e.g. Letters and Sounds or a similar programme, and that staff attending training are familiar with the aims and approaches outlined in these materials.

Practitioners who attend this course will develop a better understanding of the theory of and technical terms used in phonics. They will be provided with a wealth of ideas for practical activities for the phonic session and will gain a better understanding of how to structure the phonic session so that children’s individual needs can be met. Practitioners will feel more confident when teaching phonics and planning adult-guided activities to reinforce the phonics learned in the ‘taught’ sessions.

  • Explore the theory behind a systematic approach to teaching phonics
  • Clarify phonological terminology and technical terms
  • Study the expectations within each Phase of the Letters and Sounds programme and how they relate to the teaching and learning of our pupils
  • Clarify the structure, delivery and pace of a phonics session
  • Match phonics teaching to the learning styles of pupils, incorporating movement, games and enjoyment
  • Make full use of both the indoor and outdoor learning environments to teach and support phonological development, reading and writing
  • Creating literate environments to support the independent application of reading and writing skills
  • Share a wealth of practical ideas, use resources that are cheap, versatile and engaging
  • An opportunity to ask questions, discuss issues and share ideas
