This course is aimed at newly-qualified teachers, teaching assistants and teachers new to Early Years and KS1. The training assumes that a systematic synthetic phonic programme is in use in the school, e.g. Letters and Sounds or a similar programme, and that staff attending training are familiar with the aims and approaches outlined in these materials.
Practitioners who attend this course will develop a better understanding of the theory of and technical terms used in phonics. They will be provided with a wealth of ideas for practical activities for the phonic session and will gain a better understanding of how to structure the phonic session so that children’s individual needs can be met. Practitioners will feel more confident when teaching phonics and planning adult-guided activities to reinforce the phonics learned in the ‘taught’ sessions.
